漢英同聲傳譯的時差控制與文體變化

究竟什么時候保持多少距離？不同的距離對翻譯本身或所使用的技巧有什么影響？這仍然很值得探討。

　　在無事先準備的即席視譯與同聲傳譯中，譯員無論如何都必須考慮的問題是：什么時候切入原語開始翻譯？翻譯進行中與原語保持多大時差？如何調節(jié)語速？一般的說法是一旦可以翻譯成一個子句或相對獨立的一個短語（如說明時間、地點、目的、條件等狀語）時即可切入原語進行翻譯，翻譯進行過程中譯語與原語盡量保持半句到一句的距離，不同的譯者可以根據(jù)自己的經(jīng)驗和講話人的具體情況靈活掌握。但在實踐中，語言現(xiàn)象千變萬化，就漢英兩種語言來說，其結構形式大相徑庭，常常需要重新理解和隨機應變地處理，句子的劃分可能因時、因地、因人而異。究竟什么時候保持多少距離？不同的距離對翻譯本身或所使用的技巧有什么影響？這仍然很值得探討。讓我們通過具體的譯例來看看可能出現(xiàn)的情況。

It is at this turn of centuries, that the government leaders from all parts of the world are gathered here for this commemoration. In our time, the widely representative and authoritative inter-governmental organization is the United Nations. And it is now its 50th anniversary. The commemoration is therefore all the more significant. We can use this occasion to stand on a higher plane in both retrospection and prospection, and to discuss how to fulfill the great missions of the United Nations.

We can use this opportunity to take a look at the past and the future from a higher plane and share our views on how to turn the lofty missions of the United Nations into reality.
　　顯然，從同聲傳譯的角度來看，第一種時差很小，第二種也雖然也盡量緊跟，但時差還是有所增加，而第三種則時差增加更加明顯，與第一種相去甚遠，在整體上使人感到并非無事先準備的即席同聲傳譯。
　　通過分析我們不難發(fā)現(xiàn)，以上三者時差上的不一致造成了文體風格上的差別：譯法1與原語的信息組織順序十分貼近，但為了滿足即席譯出通順的譯語而把正式的書面文體譯得十分口語化，是明顯的釋義性口譯。譯法2則盡量靠近原語的文體風格，同時又盡量不改變其信息組織的順序，是比較正式的口譯，因此文體上口語特色有所減弱。譯法3的文體又有了更大的變化，變得非常正式，很象經(jīng)過推敲的筆譯譯文。
　　其次，時差的不同也導致了不同的翻譯技巧：譯文1跟得很緊，其切入時間是譯員聽到第一個逗號所表示的聽斷之前，所以就把“飽經(jīng)滄桑的21世紀”，“僅剩下幾個春秋”以及后面的主句都分別譯成了單獨的句子。譯文2的切入時間是在第一個逗號所表示的停頓之后，所以使用了“and then”連接下文，譯出了一個并列句。如果譯文3也是即興同傳，那么其切入時間應該是在聽完整句或接近句末的位置，因此才有可能提出“mankind”做主語，把整句譯成較復雜的主從句。同樣，在翻譯進行到第二句時譯文1由于仍然步步緊跟，所以用“It is …that…”為下文提供一個便于操作的框架，用“In our time…,”翻譯“contemporary”，用名詞“commemoration”翻譯動詞“紀念”并重復使用這個詞。其中斷句技巧得到了充分的發(fā)揮，可以體現(xiàn)一種果斷而靈活的風格。譯文2由于沒有那么快地斷句，所以使用了不同的手法：先根據(jù)語境（此次大會的主題）通過預測技巧譯出“the 50th anniversary of the United Nations”, 等聽到下文“…是很有意義的”后又根據(jù)這一新變化使用了“which”引導的從句這樣的追加、補充技巧。至于第三種譯法，從其文句組織結構上看，我們完全可以肯定，這是譯員事先已經(jīng)拿到的已經(jīng)成文的譯文。這種譯文雖然可以根據(jù)會議以同聲傳譯的方式（根據(jù)講話人的語速和風格）讀出，但與一般人們想象的即席同聲傳譯完全是兩回事。因為，在即興同聲傳譯實踐中，如果譯員不是記憶力超凡，預測能力出眾，心理素質極佳的特殊天才，保持這么大的時差實在很難保證一直能跟得上。萬一出現(xiàn)一連串有關聯(lián)合國實績方面的具體統(tǒng)計數(shù)字、地名、人名等特殊情況，也實在很難確保不出現(xiàn)疏漏。
