一、稱謂口譯
Interpreting Terms of Address and Titles
 
在外事接待活動中，譯員首先面臨的一道難題是稱謂的口譯。稱謂代表了一個人的職位、職銜或?qū)W銜，體現(xiàn)了一個人的資歷和地位。稱謂的誤譯不僅是對有關(guān)人員的不尊重，而且也會產(chǎn)生種種不良的后果。稱謂的準(zhǔn)確翻譯其關(guān)鍵在于譯員對有關(guān)人員的身份及其稱謂的表達(dá)是否有一個正確的理解，尤其是對稱謂語的認(rèn)識。一種稱謂語很可能表示多種身份，例如，英語的頭銜語president，譯成漢語時可視具體情況分別譯作共和國的總統(tǒng)、國家主席、大學(xué)的校長、學(xué)院的院長、學(xué)會或協(xié)會的會長或主席、公司的總裁或董事長等等。
 
一般說來，各類機構(gòu)或組織的首長其漢語稱謂譯成英語時雖可套用通用詞head，但從比較嚴(yán)格的意義上看，應(yīng)使用特定的、規(guī)范的稱謂語。例如：
　
校長（大學(xué)）：President of Beijing University
校長（中小學(xué)）：Principal /Headmaster of Donghai Middle School
院長（大學(xué)下屬）：Dean of the Graduate School
系主任（大學(xué)學(xué)院下屬）:Chair/Chairman of the English Department
會長／主席（學(xué)／協(xié)會）：President of the Student Union, Shanghai University
廠長（企業(yè)）：Director of the Machine Tools Manufacturing Plant
院長（醫(yī)院）：President of Huadong Hospital
主任（中心）:Director of the Business Center
主任（行政）：Director of Foreign Affairs Office
董事長（企業(yè)）：President／Chairman of the Board of Directors
董事長（學(xué)校）：President／Chairman of the Board of Trustees
 
首席長官的漢語稱謂常以“總……”表示，而表示首席長官的英語稱謂語則常帶有chief general, head ,managing這類詞，因此當(dāng)翻譯冠以“總”字的頭銜時，需遵循英語頭銜的表達(dá)習(xí)慣：

有些部門或機構(gòu)的首長或主管的英譯，可以一些通用的頭銜詞表示，例如下列機構(gòu)的負(fù)責(zé)人可以用director, head或chief來表示：
　
司（部屬）department
廳（省屬）department
署（省屬）office（行署為administrative office)
局bureau
所institute
處division
科section
股section
室office
教研室program/section

例：局長director of the bureau，head of the bureau，bureau chief
國務(wù)院the State Council屬下的部為ministry，所以部長叫作minister。另外，公署專員叫作commissioner，其辦事機構(gòu)叫作“專員公署”，英語為prefectural commissioner's office。
漢語中表示副職的頭銜一般都冠以“副”字，英譯時需視詞語的固定搭配或表達(dá)習(xí)慣等情況，可選擇vice, associate, assistant, deputy等詞。相對而言，vice使用面較廣，例如：
　
副總統(tǒng)（或大學(xué)副校長等）vice president
副主席（或系副主任等）vice chairman
副總理vice premier
副部長vice minister
副省長vice governor
副市長vice mayor
副領(lǐng)事vice consul
副校長（中小學(xué)）vice principal
　
行政職務(wù)的副職頭銜與的學(xué)術(shù)頭銜的“副”職稱往往用不同的詞表達(dá)，最為常用的英語詞是associate，例如：
　
副教授associate professor
副研究員associate research fellow
副主編associate managing editor
副編審associate senior editor
副審判長associate judge
副研究館員associate research fellow of ... （e.g.．，library science）
副譯審associate senior translator
副主任醫(yī)師associate senior doctor
　
當(dāng)然，有些英語職位頭銜，如manager和headmaster，其副職頭銜可冠以assistant，例如：

副總經(jīng)理assistant/deputy general manager，assistant/deputy managing director
大堂副理（賓館）assistant manager
副校長（中小學(xué)）assistant headmaster
　
以director表示的職位的副職常以deputy director表示。此外，secretary,mayor,dean等頭銜的副職也可冠以deputy，例如：
　
副秘書長deputy secretary-general
耐書記deputy secretary
副市長deputy mayor
副院長deputy dean
　
學(xué)術(shù)頭銜系列除了含“正”“副”級別的高級職稱和中級職稱外，還有初級職稱如“助理”，“助理”常用assistant來表示，例如：
　
助理教授assistant professor
助理研究員assistant research fellow
助理工程師assistant engineer
助理編輯assistant editor
助理館員assistant research fellow of…（e. g.，library science）
助理教練assistant coach
助理農(nóng)藝師assistant agronomist
　
還有一些行業(yè)的職稱頭銜，其高級職稱不用“正”或“副”表示，而直接用“高級”或“資深”來表示，我們可以用senior來稱呼，例如：
　
高級編輯senior editor
高級工程師senior engineer
高級記者senior reporter
高級講師senior lecturer
高級教師senior teacher
高級農(nóng)藝師senior agronomist
　
有一些行業(yè)的職稱或職務(wù)系列中，最高級別的職位冠以“首席”一詞，英語常用chief來表示：
　
首席執(zhí)行官chief executive officer（CEO)
首席法官chief judge
首席顧問chief advisor
首席檢察官chief inspector/prosecutor
首席仲裁員chief arbitrator
首席監(jiān)事chief supervisor
首席播音員chief announcer /broadcaster

除了用“總”、“高級”、“首席”等詞語來表示一些機構(gòu)或行業(yè)的最高級職務(wù)之外，還有一些高級職務(wù)則使用帶“長”字的頭銜，例如：
　
檢察長procurator-general
審判忙presiding judge；chief judge；chief of judges
護士長head nurse
秘書長secretary-general
參謀長chief of staff
廚師長head cook，chef
　
有些頭銜會含諸如“代理”、“常務(wù)”、“執(zhí)行”、“名譽”這類稱謂語，例如：
　
代理市長，代理總理，代理主任
常務(wù)理事，常務(wù)副校長
執(zhí)行主席，執(zhí)行主任，執(zhí)行秘書
名譽校長，名譽會長
　
一般說來，“代理”可譯作acting,例如：
　
代理市長acting mayor
代理總理acting premier
代理主任acting director
　
“常務(wù)”可以managing表示，例如：
　
常務(wù)理事managing director
常務(wù)副校長managing vice president（亦可作first vice mayor)
　
“執(zhí)行”可譯作executive，例如：

執(zhí)行秘書executive secretary
執(zhí)行主席executive chairman（也可譯作presiding chairman)
 
“名譽”譯為honorary，例如：
 
名譽校長honorary president /principal
名譽主席／會長honorary chairman/president（也可用emeritus表示，如emeritus chairman/president)
 
有些職稱或職務(wù)帶有“主任”、“主治”、“特級”廠特派，、“特約”等頭銜，英譯不盡相同，例如：

主任編輯associate senior editor
主任秘書chief secretary
主任醫(yī)師senior doctor：
主任護士senior nurse
主治醫(yī)師attending/chief doctor；physician；consultant
特級教師special-grade senior teacher
特派記者accredited correspondent
特派員/專員commissioner

許多職稱、職務(wù)的頭銜稱謂其英語表達(dá)法難以歸類，需要日積月累，逐步登錄在自己的稱謂語料庫中。以下所列舉是其中的一部分：
