漢英同聲傳譯的時(shí)差控制與文體變化

        在無(wú)事先準(zhǔn)備的即席視譯與同聲傳譯中，譯員無(wú)論如何都必須考慮的問(wèn)題是：什么時(shí)候切入原語(yǔ)開始翻譯？翻譯進(jìn)行中與原語(yǔ)保持多大時(shí)差？如何調(diào)節(jié)語(yǔ)速？一般的說(shuō)法是一旦可以翻譯成一個(gè)子句或相對(duì)獨(dú)立的一個(gè)短語(yǔ)（如說(shuō)明時(shí)間、地點(diǎn)、目的、條件等狀語(yǔ)）時(shí)即可切入原語(yǔ)進(jìn)行翻譯，翻譯進(jìn)行過(guò)程中譯語(yǔ)與原語(yǔ)盡量保持半句到一句的距離，不同的譯者可以根據(jù)自己的經(jīng)驗(yàn)和講話人的具體情況靈活掌握。但在實(shí)踐中，語(yǔ)言現(xiàn)象千變?nèi)f化，就漢英兩種語(yǔ)言來(lái)說(shuō)，其結(jié)構(gòu)形式大相徑庭，常常需要重新理解和隨機(jī)應(yīng)變地處理，句子的劃分可能因時(shí)、因地、因人而異。究竟什么時(shí)候保持多少距離？不同的距離對(duì)翻譯本身或所使用的技巧有什么影響？這仍然很值得探討。讓我們通過(guò)具體的譯例來(lái)看看可能出現(xiàn)的情況。

　　飽經(jīng)滄桑的20世紀(jì)僅剩下幾個(gè)春秋，人類即將跨入充滿希望的21世紀(jì)。在這臨近世紀(jì)之交的時(shí)刻，各國(guó)領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人從四面八方來(lái)到這里，紀(jì)念當(dāng)代具有普遍性、權(quán)威性的政府間國(guó)際組織－－聯(lián)合國(guó)成立50周年，是很有意義的。我們可以利用這個(gè)機(jī)會(huì)，站在更高的立足點(diǎn)上，回顧過(guò)去，展望未來(lái)，共同探討如何實(shí)現(xiàn)聯(lián)合國(guó)所肩負(fù)的崇高使命。

　　The 20th century is full of changes. It has only a few years to go. Mankind will soon enter the promising 21st century. It is at this turn of centuries, that the government leaders from all parts of the world are gathered here for this commemoration. In our time, the widely representative and authoritative inter-governmental organization is the United Nations. And it is now its 50th anniversary. The commemoration is therefore all the more significant. We can use this occasion to stand on a higher plane in both retrospection and prospection, and to discuss how to fulfill the great missions of the United Nations.

We can use this opportunity to take a look at the past and the future from a higher plane and share our views on how to turn the lofty missions of the United Nations into reality.
　　顯然，從同聲傳譯的角度來(lái)看，第一種時(shí)差很小，第二種也雖然也盡量緊跟，但時(shí)差還是有所增加，而第三種則時(shí)差增加更加明顯，與第一種相去甚遠(yuǎn)，在整體上使人感到并非無(wú)事先準(zhǔn)備的即席同聲傳譯。
　　通過(guò)分析我們不難發(fā)現(xiàn)，以上三者時(shí)差上的不一致造成了文體風(fēng)格上的差別：譯法1與原語(yǔ)的信息組織順序十分貼近，但為了滿足即席譯出通順的譯語(yǔ)而把正式的書面文體譯得十分口語(yǔ)化，是明顯的釋義性口譯。譯法2則盡量靠近原語(yǔ)的文體風(fēng)格，同時(shí)又盡量不改變其信息組織的順序，是比較正式的口譯，因此文體上口語(yǔ)特色有所減弱。譯法3的文體又有了更大的變化，變得非常正式，很象經(jīng)過(guò)推敲的筆譯譯文。
　　其次，時(shí)差的不同也導(dǎo)致了不同的翻譯技巧：譯文1跟得很緊，其切入時(shí)間是譯員聽到第一個(gè)逗號(hào)所表示的聽斷之前，所以就把“飽經(jīng)滄桑的21世紀(jì)”，“僅剩下幾個(gè)春秋”以及后面的主句都分別譯成了單獨(dú)的句子。譯文2的切入時(shí)間是在第一個(gè)逗號(hào)所表示的停頓之后，所以使用了“and then”連接下文，譯出了一個(gè)并列句。如果譯文3也是即興同傳，那么其切入時(shí)間應(yīng)該是在聽完整句或接近句末的位置，因此才有可能提出“mankind”做主語(yǔ)，把整句譯成較復(fù)雜的主從句。同樣，在翻譯進(jìn)行到第二句時(shí)譯文1由于仍然步步緊跟，所以用“It is …that…”為下文提供一個(gè)便于操作的框架，用“In our time…,”翻譯“contemporary”，用名詞“commemoration”翻譯動(dòng)詞“紀(jì)念”并重復(fù)使用這個(gè)詞。其中斷句技巧得到了充分的發(fā)揮，可以體現(xiàn)一種果斷而靈活的風(fēng)格。譯文2由于沒(méi)有那么快地?cái)嗑?，所以使用了不同的手法：先根?jù)語(yǔ)境（此次大會(huì)的主題）通過(guò)預(yù)測(cè)技巧譯出“the 50th anniversary of the United Nations”, 等聽到下文“…是很有意義的”后又根據(jù)這一新變化使用了“which”引導(dǎo)的從句這樣的追加、補(bǔ)充技巧。至于第三種譯法，從其文句組織結(jié)構(gòu)上看，我們完全可以肯定，這是譯員事先已經(jīng)拿到的已經(jīng)成文的譯文。這種譯文雖然可以根據(jù)會(huì)議以同聲傳譯的方式（根據(jù)講話人的語(yǔ)速和風(fēng)格）讀出，但與一般人們想象的即席同聲傳譯完全是兩回事。因?yàn)椋诩磁d同聲傳譯實(shí)踐中，如果譯員不是記憶力超凡，預(yù)測(cè)能力出眾，心理素質(zhì)極佳的特殊天才，保持這么大的時(shí)差實(shí)在很難保證一直能跟得上。萬(wàn)一出現(xiàn)一連串有關(guān)聯(lián)合國(guó)實(shí)績(jī)方面的具體統(tǒng)計(jì)數(shù)字、地名、人名等特殊情況，也實(shí)在很難確保不出現(xiàn)疏漏。

不妨再看一則譯例：

　　比較分析這兩段譯文，我們同樣可以發(fā)現(xiàn)時(shí)差的不同對(duì)譯文文體的影響：譯文1跟得很緊，因此采用插入介詞短語(yǔ)“… through the collective efforts of its members, and with its aim to…”的辦法邊翻譯邊聽下文中將要出現(xiàn)的謂語(yǔ)部分，而譯文2則直接譯 出了“…h(huán)as done much useful work in…”,說(shuō)明譯員聽完全句后才開始翻譯，或者對(duì)講稿內(nèi)容十分了解，知道后文內(nèi)容，或者預(yù)測(cè)能力很強(qiáng)。
　　上述兩段同傳的各種不同譯文說(shuō)明，時(shí)差的控制直接涉及到譯語(yǔ)的文體風(fēng)格，不同的翻譯技巧，譯員的素質(zhì)、經(jīng)驗(yàn)和翻譯前的準(zhǔn)備情況，對(duì)同傳與連續(xù)翻譯或筆譯的本質(zhì)區(qū)別亦有解釋作用。因此，在同傳教學(xué)中，結(jié)合實(shí)踐經(jīng)驗(yàn)和翻譯理論與技巧問(wèn)題不斷增強(qiáng)學(xué)員的時(shí)差控制意識(shí)，這實(shí)在是不能不充分強(qiáng)調(diào)的一個(gè)重要方面。
　　整個(gè)話語(yǔ)及時(shí)調(diào)整用詞和語(yǔ)速，同時(shí)避免拖泥帶水地邊翻譯邊糾正或因無(wú)暇糾正而使人不知所云。根據(jù)筆者體驗(yàn)，由于英漢兩種語(yǔ)言在表達(dá)同樣的意思時(shí)漢語(yǔ)音節(jié)數(shù)往往更少，顯得更簡(jiǎn)潔，同傳中為了調(diào)整語(yǔ)速，使話語(yǔ)銜接，常常需要使用一些填充詞語(yǔ)，并對(duì)暫時(shí)還難以把握的情況做一些“模糊化”處理。在不同情況下，不同的譯員的譯語(yǔ)差異可能會(huì)比連續(xù)翻譯大的多，比筆譯之間的差異更大。這正反映了同傳對(duì)靈活性的高要求，但并不意味著它沒(méi)有規(guī)律可循。
